It’s 8am on Tuesday, just two days before Christmas, and while most of us are frenetically tending to last minute “Festivus” details, one Iranian American is quietly planning a holiday dinner for over a hundred homeless Virginians. Every month, Desiree Mehbod and her posse of over 10 volunteers converge on The Bailey’s Crossroads Shelter in Falls Church, Virginia, and serve up some of the best Persian Soul Food in town to those who can’t afford to feed themselves. Armed with the best flavors of Iran, from Loobiya Polo to Kabob Koobideh, these Iranian American angels transform the tired and hopeless faces of the desperate to smiles and momentary gratification. Mark Khosravi

Mark Khosravi has taught freshman biology and advanced placement environmental science at Lake Braddock High School in Burke for eleven years, and at his Clifton Exercise Studio for 20 years teaching fitness Taekwondo, basic boxing, graduated blackbelts to level of 3rd degree. He works as a part time naturalist at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park, in Chantilla, VA. A graduate of George Mason University, Khosravi also volunteers during the summer for his alma mater monitoring water quality and other environmental factors on Pohick Bay and the Potomac River. A photo he took of a garter snake mating ball, which has never been recorded in Virginia before, was published in a Smithsonian book titled, “Snakes in Question.” Continue reading “Mark Khosravi”

Celine Mehbod an Iranian-Belgian journalist, joined RTL (Europe’s largest TV, radio and production company) in 2001. She started working for the program “7 jours”, and currently appears on the program “Tout s’explique”. She studied journalism at The Université Libre de Bruxelles (or ULB), a French-speaking university in Brussels, Belgium. Below you will find some of her latest reportage.
